Antonio Vivaldi's Opus X, dedicated by him unspecifically to the "flauto", is held in high esteem by recorder and transverse flute players alike. It contains some of his masterpieces, solo concertos for string ensemble and continuo group, which he adorned with suggestive titles, such as "Die Nacht - La Notte" or "Il Cardellino", named after the goldfinch.

Alessandro Scarlatti (1660 - 1725) was considered a great master of the "Cantata da camera" in Italy and beyond its borders. These small, non-staged operas were extremely popular in the aristocratic circles of Naples, Rome and Florence.
