KING OF THE MUSES
Music for Lute and Flute from the End of the Middle Ages to the Rococo Period
Emperor Maximilian I was praised by his contemporaries as the "King of the Muses", whose domain stretched from Tuscany to the North Sea, from Silesia and Moravia in the east to the Grand Duchy of Burgundy. Music of the Franco-Flemish school of his time thus forms the prelude to a wide-ranging programme that places him alongside two other important patrons of the arts, Moritz Landgrave of Hesse and Augustus the Strong. In their service were musicians such as John Dowland, Francesco Veracini and Johann David Heinichen. Thus a fascinating musical arc is spanned from the end of the Middle Ages to modern times.
