A LIFE FOR TANGO | Homage to Piazzolla
Concert reading with MÁS QUE TANGO & Katja Schild (Bavarian Broadcas & arte)
“I started a revolution in tango.” Only one person can claim this with such confidence: Astor Piazzolla, inventor of tango nuevo, who brought the melancholic dance from the bars of Argentina to concert halls around the world. For classical performers such as Gidon Kremer and Daniel Barenboim, but also for jazz greats, Piazzolla's masterpieces are now part of their standard repertoire. But the path from his father's New York barbershop to the tango bars of Buenos Aires and on to becoming a highly respected composer was a rocky one: marked by doubts, longing, peppered with surprising encounters and humorous events, and punctuated by existential moments, experiences of love and death. MÁS QUE TANGO brings Piazzolla's life story to the stage in an enchanting concert reading. Cheerful, dramatic, and thoughtful moments characterize his memories and find expression in Piazzolla's unmistakable music, full of rhythm and temperament. Sometimes urgent, sometimes elegiac, sometimes with a springy verve: A LIFE FOR TANGO touches the audience with its musical diversity and adventurous stories.
MÁS QUE TANGO, the ensemble led by Augsburg musicians Iris Lichtinger and Martin Franke, has once again chosen a top-class partner for this program: Christian Gerber from Hamburg, one of the most sought-after bandoneonists internationally and tour partner of Isabelle van Keulen.
Katja Schild, well-known as a presenter on Bavarian Radio, lends her sensitive voice to the tango genius Piazzolla.
