Originating in the red-light districts of Buenos Aires, Argentine tango made its way to the major cities of Europe in the 1920s, where it enjoyed great success. It is no coincidence that its wicked aura also left its mark on the work of Brecht and Weill.

In this concert, Brecht's underworld crook Mackie Messer meets the Buenos Aires pimp Don Nicanor Paredes, celebrated in the poetry of Jorge L. Borges, and the music of Kurt Weill meets that of Astor Piazzolla.

MÁS QUE TANGO

Sebastián Arranz (Berlin), vocals | Christian Gerber (Hamburg), bandoneón | Martin Franke (Augsburg), violin | Iris Lichtinger (Augsburg), piano

 Press reviews:

“It's no coincidence that the ‘Pimp Ballad’ is in tango time. Kurt Weill's songs meet Astor Piazzolla's tango and harmonize perfectly in their laconic melancholy and suggestiveness. MÁS QUE TANGO play furiously.” (Brecht Festival Augsburg)
